Rise of the Tomb Raider: The Inconsequential Injury Simulator

Tea and I found a sale on games recently and decided to pick up the new Tomb Raider for the Xbone. It’s a good game so far with nice graphics and fun gameplay, but like its predecessor I noticed the game has a fascination with finding new ways to toss Lara around and have her fall, mauled, shot at, bludgeoned and swimming through corpse filled waters with bleeding open wounds. Now any normal human being would be out for the count after even a couple of these injuries, but Tomb Raider wants us to know that Lara is a tough girl, and the only way to get that across is to have her get the crap beaten out of her repeatedly, but still push through like a champ… except at some point it stops being noble and inspiring, and becomes a bit of a parody.

Now despite all of this, Lara is a good character from what we’ve seen of her so far, so the point here is that the excessive physical abuse she suffers seems unnecessary. After all, we already know she is a strong  and determined individual simply by what she’s set out to accomplish in the game. I just don’t know what her near super human levels of endurance really adds to her character and the story.

At any rate, I’m off to find out where this story goes with the Tomb Raider. Toodles.
